In a sense, we are entering uncharted waters where the use of RPA allows machines to learn and become more efficient. Does the question then become what does this mean to a business?
In the first instance, it will not mean significant job losses, rather it will allow for re-deployment of staff to more creative or productive roles.
More importantly and perhaps in contrast to traditional IT solutions, RPA provides for the automation of various jobs or functions previously completed by humans at a fraction of the cost while also completing its tasks error-free.
Also, RPA uses existing infrastructures and does not disrupt underlying systems. RPA is therefore cost-effective and not an operating cost but a by-product of automation.
Ideally, robots are best suited to high volume, repeatable processes. Accounts payable is a good example of this as the robot is trained to, open the email containing the invoice, extract data from either a PDF or Excel invoice, enter it into the accounting system for payment. Typically, a robot may process some 4000 invoices per day whereas a human would be limited to around 200.
One of the benefits of using robots is that they can operate 24/7, don’t take leave, and are not subject to employment laws. We have mentioned in previous blogs that not only is RPA here to stay, is the way of the future and should be embraced by management as another valuable tool in their business processes.
Some of the other benefits of robots are, deliver increased profitability, improves accuracy, streamlines workflow, allows for superior scalability, reduced processing times, easy to train, and seamless integration into existing systems. Also, robots are easy to multiply so can be deployed as demand increases.
Robots can also report progress and errors via emails to specified parties.
Whilst some view RPA as a disruptive force we do not see it as that rather, as indicated above, it should be seen as another business strategy whose implementation will enhance business processes.
If you have not researched or developed strategies for RPA the time to act is now or you will get left behind.
